How to organize skiing from Kraków?
The southern part of Poland, where the landscape is shaped mostely by highlands and mountains, offers not only amazing views and wonderful walking trails but it also has a plenty of marvellous ski slopes. In fact only in Małopolska region, there are almost 40 such facilities. The most popular ones are located in Tatra Mountains and they are easily available from Zakopane or Nowy Targ.
Dear reader, if you are wondering about going skiing from Krakow and you are not sure how to organize such tour, here are some tips for you, (they are based on messages or questions we often receive):
Q: When is the best time for a skiing tour ?
A: Obviously, concerning the geography of Poland, the best time for skiing is, out of question, in winter. In Poland winter lasts from December to February or March (sometimes it's snowing even in April). However the best time for skiing seems to be a the end of January and usually the mid-skiing season is in Fabruary. This is also the time when the average air temperature in Poland tends to be the lowest of all months. If, your planning to come to Poland for skiing earlier or later than February, for instance in December or in March, it is worth remembering that sometimes during these months the natural conditions for skiing are hard to find, because of the lack of natural snow. However, if you don't mind skiing on artificially produced snow, then there is nothing to worry about, because a lot of ski resorts use snowmakers to make skiing possible for the whole season.
Q: I'm staying in Kraków and I'd like to go skiing, but I don't have either appropriate clothes or any sports equipment (such as a helmet or skis). What can I do ?
A: There are no official requirements about the ski wear on the ski slopes, at least not in Poland, In fact many people decide to ski wearing jeans and some winter jacket. It really depends on your preferences. If you decide to go skiing wearing casual clothes then, we always recommend taking some extra clothes for change. But if you are not comfortable with skiing wearing jeans, you can always do the shopping, for instance in Krakowska Shopping Mall, which is very close to Market Square and Train/ Bus station and at the same time it offers a wide range of stores with sports clothes. When it comes to the skiing equipment, you can always check if a particular ski resort offers its rental. Most of them do.
Q: Can I go skiing, if I can't ski and this would be my first time on a ski slope?
A: Yes, of course. Most of ski resorts offer preparative classes with an instructor on both beginner and advanced levels. In order to arrange such clesses, you can either call or e-mail a particular resort.
How to get to Zakopane or Nowy Targ ski slopes area ?
One way to do that is to take a bus or train from Kraków bus station and get off on the stop in, for instance, Poronin or Bukowina Tatrzańska. Then, propably you could take a cab or walk and get to the ski resort. However, while choosing public transport, you need to be ready for all kinds of inconviniences. First, be aware that sometimes bus timetable doesn't really work in practice and buses are late. The train from Kraków to Zakopane goes frequently and the tickets are quite cheap BUT the journey lasts 3,5 hours one way ( and the distance is 110 kilometers)
